Each hat is finished, blocked and fitted by Truffaux master hatmakers, led by Oska Truffaux, International Milliner of the Year 2021. We ship tracked to the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and worldwide, with personal sizing advice before we send a single hat.

What makes a Panama hat genuine?

A genuine Panama hat is woven by hand in Ecuador from toquilla straw — nowhere else, from nothing else. The name is history's little joke: the hats crossed the Panama isthmus on their way to the world, and the label stuck. Machine-woven paper or polypropylene "Panamas" sold in tourist shops share nothing with the real thing but the shape. The genuine article is lighter, cooler, stronger, and woven so finely it moves like cloth.

Quality is graded by the fineness and evenness of the weave — from honest everyday weaves to the extraordinary fino and Montecristi grades where a single hat represents weeks of a weaver's hands. At Truffaux we work directly with Ecuadorian weaving families, then block, trim and band every hat ourselves, which is why no two are quite alike and why yours is fitted to your head, not a shelf.

And yes — the right Panama travels. Our Traveller range is woven to roll softly into a suitcase and spring back to shape, the honest answer to the "rollable Panama" myth peddled elsewhere. Wherever you are in the world, we'll size you by measurement before shipping, and our hats arrive with care instructions to last you decades.

Panama Questions, Answered Worldwide

Where are genuine Panama hats made?

Ecuador — only Ecuador. Genuine Panama hats are handwoven from toquilla straw (Carludovica palmata) by Ecuadorian artisans. Truffaux works directly with weaving families, then finishes and fits every hat by hand.

Do you ship Panama hats to the United States, UK and Europe?

Yes — Truffaux ships tracked worldwide, including the United States, United Kingdom and all of Europe, from truffaux.com. Hats are shipped in protective packaging with sizing checked personally before dispatch.

Can a real Panama hat be rolled for travel?

Most fine Panamas should not be rolled — that's a tourist myth that ruins good hats. The honest answer is a hat woven for it: the Truffaux Traveller range rolls softly into luggage and springs back to shape.

How do I get the right size when ordering from overseas?

Measure your head and tell us — we check every order's size personally, advise if we'd size you differently, and include foam sizing shims. It's why our international reviews keep mentioning the fit.

What does a genuine Panama hat cost?

Real handwoven Panamas start around AUD $300–$400, with fino and Montecristi grades above that. A machine-made "Panama" under $100 is almost certainly paper or synthetic. The genuine hat lasts decades and is repairable.

Can I visit in person?

Yes — Truffaux Hatmakers is at 1 Olinda-Monbulk Rd, Olinda, in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, Australia. Open 7 days, expert fitting in store, and worth the trip.

The real thing, woven by hand, fitted to you.
