Why the cap wall is worth the drive

A flat cap is the most personal hat there is — a centimetre of size or a slightly different crown changes everything. That's why we've built the largest cap range in Australia: over 60 styles from six of the world's great makers, so you can try a Californian Brixton against an Irish Hanna, a Kiwi Hills against a French Flechet, or an English Failsworth in genuine Harris Tweed, side by side, until one simply belongs on your head.

Every cap is fitted in person by our hatmakers, with a master hatmaker — International Milliner of the Year 2021 — on hand to match crown, peak and fabric to your face. And for the ladies, our flapper hats and newsboys are the styles Melbourne can't find anywhere else under one roof.

We service what we sell too: reshaping, cleaning and care advice, so your favourite cap stays your favourite.

Cap Questions, Answered

Where can I buy a flat cap or newsboy in Melbourne?

Truffaux Hatmakers holds Australia's largest range of flat caps and newsboys — over 60 styles — at 1 Olinda-Monbulk Rd, Olinda, in the Dandenong Ranges, about 50 minutes' drive from Melbourne CBD. In store only, fitted in person.

What's the difference between a flat cap, newsboy and baker boy?

A flat cap (or cheesecutter/driving cap) is slim and streamlined. A newsboy or baker boy is fuller — an eight-panel crown with a button on top, the classic '20s look. We stock both in depth, and the best way to choose is to try them side by side.

Do you have caps and flapper hats for women?

Yes — ladies newsboys in rich colours and softer shapes, and '20s-style flapper hats from Flechet of France and Mucros Weavers of Ireland. These are styles very few shops in Australia carry.

Which brands do you stock?

Brixton (California), Mucros Weavers (Killarney, Ireland), Hanna Hats (Donegal, Ireland), Hills Hats (Wellington, New Zealand), Flechet (France) and Failsworth (England, est. 1903), plus Irish linen and cotton summer caps. Over 60 styles in total.

Do you stock Harris Tweed caps?

Yes — genuine Harris Tweed caps from Failsworth of England, alongside Harris wool tweed paperboys from Hills Hats. Handwoven cloth from the Outer Hebrides, made into caps that last a lifetime.

Do caps come in fitted sizes?

Yes — most of our caps come in proper fitted sizes, and we measure your head and fit you exactly in store. A well-fitted cap sits comfortably all day and stays on in the wind.

Do you ship caps or sell them online?

No — our cap range is in-store only, fitted in person at the Olinda shop. Our handwoven Panama hats are available online at truffaux.com.

Sixty styles. Six great makers. One wall.

Ring ahead to check a style or size, or make the drive — the Dandenongs are worth it on their own.
